Vehicle thefts, especially those involving Hyundais and Kias, have been on a steep and steady climb since 2021. Milwaukee news outlets are reporting that according to Milwaukee police, in the first three months of 2023, 677 Hyundai and Kias were stolen in the city. Those first quarter numbers follow a record-breaking 6,970 thefts in 2021 (as compared with 895 stolen in all of 2020).
And now, over the past few months, the Racine community is experiencing an uptick in thefts (and attempted thefts) of those same vehicles. In an April 24 press release, the Racine Police Department warned residents that targeted vehicles include the Kia Forte, Soul, and Sorento and the Hyundai Elantra, Sonata, and Accent. Police recommend using an anti-theft, club-style device and parking vehicles in locked garages or areas with obvious surveillance equipment. We’ve attached a news release from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration which highlights information about Hyundai and Kia’s free theft deterrent software for owners whose vehicles lack immobilizer equipment. The article also provides Hyundai and Kia contact phone numbers.
